Finals day preview – Asia Pacific Youth Touch Cup

May 16, 2025 @ 8:00 UTC

The final day of action gets underway at 08:00 hrs AEST as the Touch Blacks look to challenge the Emus.

Mixed 18s Grand Final 11:05 hrs

In the pools Australia took two wins from three, but New Zealand only lost by a single score in both and the third match was a draw. Can the Touch Blacks go one better in today’s final at 11:05am? Will we see the first drop-off of the day in our first final?

Meanwhile, can Tonga get on the scoresheet against the Touch Blacks in their final pool match, as they did against the Emus on Day 1?

Girls 18s Grand Final 12:00 hrs

New Zealand may have edged past the Emus on day 1, but Australia fought back with two wins on day 2. They will face each other again in our second final at midday (12:00 hrs) on day 3.

Can Lebanon spoil New Zealand’s record in the final pool game beforehand?

Boys 18s Grand Final 12:55 hrs

As expected, it’s an Australian-New Zealand final, with Lebanon and Niue playing off for the bronze medal. Can the Touch Blacks avenge their 11-7 defeat from yesterday and improve on their 4-4 draw from Day 1?

Could be another drop-off.

Mixed 20s Grand Final 13:50 hrs

We don’t yet know who will make the final with a slightly convoluted qualification process to ensure all five teams get at least six matches this week. The top two will face each other early today with the winners progressing straight to the final, whereas the losers will face another qualification match before the Grand Final at 13:50 hrs. That could be key when the expected big guns face each other again later today.

Tonga are into the 4th/5th play-off after defeat yesterday evening, but one of the Philippines and Papua New Guinea will have a chance to get to the final if they win their face off before beating the losers of Australia v New Zealand. Might be a big ask, but remember what happened in 2023?

Women’s 20s Grand Final 14:45 hrs

Another that is difficult to call. The Touch Blacks beat the Emus in the final game under lights on Day 1 but will likely face them twice today. As with the Mixed 20s, the winners in the semi progress directly to the final, whilst the losers have another qualification game.

Meanwhile, whilst Singapore will play-off for 4th/5th, Samoa and Cook Islands can upset the party. Could one of them test the loser of the first Australia-New Zealand battle?

Men’s 20s Grand Final 15:40 hrs

Another close encounter, with two draws between the top two following an Australian win in the first match. Cook Islands have been competitive and will look to push NZ in their final pool match before the final clash of the day for the top two. Don’t be surprised to see another drop-off.
